Professor Lesley Regan has been awarded a damehood in the New Year’s Honours List.
Professor Regan served as the President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists between 2016-2019, standing down on 13 December. Lesley continues to work at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and is the honorary secretary of FIGO, the International Federation or Gynaecology and Obstetrics.
Professor Dame Lesley Regan, said:
“I am delighted and honoured to be recognised in the New Year Honours. The progress we have made in women’s health at the RCOG is only possible because of the hard work and commitment of the wonderful staff and our wider membership. We have much work to do to achieve the aims set out in the Better for Women report and I look forward to supporting the RCOG and its many key partners to transform healthcare services for women and girls.”
Dr Eddie Morris, President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said:
“I am delighted that Professor Lesley Regan has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours List for her services and commitment to women’s health, during her time as President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
“As president for the last three years, Lesley has been a force of nature. Her dedication to women’s health, and women’s equality – at home and abroad – is inspirational. We are particularly grateful for her leadership in developing our Better for Women report, published earlier this month, which presents a new and bold approach to transform women’s health in the UK and ensure services are joined up and more responsive to the needs of girls and women.
“In her time as President, Lesley has not shied away from controversy or criticism and has infinite energy when defending the rights of women. She has worked tirelessly to improve access to safe abortion care across the UK and campaigned to help women in Northern Ireland access abortion services in their own country; something that is set to become a reality in the coming months.
“Lesley has also overseen the successful relocation of the RCOG from Regent’s Park to London Bridge, securing the future of the College for generations to come.
“I congratulate Lesley and the many other healthcare leaders that have been recognised in today’s honours.”
