Preventing Unintended Pregnancies after use of Emergency Contraception

Source: The Lancet

This Bridge-It trial demonstrated an opportunity for pharmacists to input into increased contraceptive care and prevent unintended pregnancies after use of emergency contraception.

The results highlighted that if pharmacists provide a supply of the progestogen-only pill to women requesting emergency contraception, along with a rapid access appointment to a sexual and reproductive health clinic, this resulted in a significantly higher proportion of women using an effective method of contraception 4 months later compared with when emergency contraception was supplied alone.

The study also demonstrated that significantly fewer women in the intervention group used emergency contraception again, during these 4 months.
